About Carol Todd

Picture
October 10, 2012 is a day that Carol will not forget.  It was the day that her daughter Amanda took her own life by suicide.

Through the pain of losing her daughter, Carol has taken a stand and shared Amanda’s story with not only her community but the world. Little did she know she would soon be thrust in to the spotlight as a global advocate sharing the voice of her daughter and increasing awareness of bullying, cyberabuse, internet safety, mental health and now more recently, gender based cyberviolence.

Amanda started a conversation and brought to the world’s attention the serious consequences of the serious issues mentioned.

Carol has made it her goal to continue the conversation and to get others engaged into the conversations. Amanda had a dream of helping kids stay strong, and through Carol’s efforts in creating The Amanda Todd Legacy Society this dream has become a reality.

The Amanda Todd Legacy Society is a non-profit that was created by Carol to help youth and beyond with the availability of resources and assistance for anti-bullying, mental health and internet safety.

Carol has had the opportunity to share her vision and discuss cyber bullying and mental health issues during many interviews with leading media professionals around the globe. She has formed strong alliances with world leaders and organizations such as Kids Help Phone, Telus Wise and the Canadian Red Cross.  Most recently, Carol was in Ottawa speaking to a Standing Committee on Gender Based Violence and was in Iqaluit, Nunavut at the Hope and Healing Conference put on by the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) where she spoke to the youth and adults  about Amanda’s Story and how there is always HOPE in the spaces of our lives.

As a result of her courage, determination and ultimately the love of her daughter, Carol continues to be the voice that Amanda never had.  The legacy has created a global campaign of awareness called Light Up Purple for World Mental Heath Day.  This date falling on October 10th each year which provides a remembrance of Amanda and her voice.

A close friend wrote these words...

" As you go forward in the days and months ahead consider carefully what and how much can be done.  Amanda’s legacy should be one that teaches awareness and that our society will only succeed via tolerance, compassion, community, and forgiveness. It takes a village to raise a child.  We are ALL that village. "

"I have created the Amanda Todd Legacy in memory of my daughter and have surrounded her and the world with SNOWFLAKES. The mission is that when others see SNOWFLAKES, they can see how beautiful they are and how a simple snowflake can relate to people."  ~ Carol Todd
